Why should I seal new conrete?
Despite its durability, concrete is a porous material, which means it can absorb water, chlorides, stains, and other water- or oil-based materials that it comes in contact with. By treating the concrete with a concrete sealer, you can inhibit the penetration of these intruders while allowing the concrete surface to breathe, so moisture within the concrete doesn't become trapped. Which in return will protect your investment in your concrete. You will only pay more the next time you need to replace your concrete.
WHY SHOULD I REPAIR CONCRETE, RATHER THAN REPLACE?
Concrete is known to do its regular things. Replacing the concrete will only cost much more than resurfacing it. New concrete also
requires the use of heavy machinery, which means the replacement of landscaping, and the areas around the new
concrete. Once you have the new concrete, thats all it is!
The new concrete would also be subject to the same damage and elements that it always has been, and will eventually
put you right back into the position that you may be in now.
With resurfacing your concrete, it doesn't require heavy machinery, or cause damage to the surroundings. It usually takes only a few
days to install, and then you can begin to enjoy how beautiful concrete can be. Your new concrete surfaces will also be protected
from any harsh elements as stains, oil, and salt damage, not to mention that with the numerious amount of colors and patterns, you can design you new surface to match your home. The easiest way to improve landscaping would be to cover your concrete driveway with a sealing system.
DO THE Concrete Coatings WEAR OFF?
STARDEKS Products should not show any abnormal wear provided the sealer is recoated as wear occurs. In most cases
this on average is 3-4 years under normall traffic conditions. The sealer is a protective coating which absorbes most of the
wear, scuff marks, etc. generally disappear with a new coat of sealer.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DO A JOB?
Typically, it will take 2-3 days depending on the weather and size of the project.
HOW SOON CAN IT BE USED AFTER APPLICATION?
Most of the concrete sealing products dry in just a few hours.For normal foot traffic, excluding high heels, cleats, or spikes: 24 hours
Vehicle traffic: 48 to 72 hours.
( At room temperature, weather permitting)
WHAT ABOUT HEAVED (RAISED), SUNKEN, AND DAMAGED CONCRETE?
Heaved concrete, can generally be ground down,or the adjecent section can be built up to meet it using a variety of
materials. Severly damaged sections may need to be replaced, yet minimizing the cost of replacing the entire surface.
CAN CRACKS BE REPAIRED?
YES! Cracks are repaired using high strength epoies and fillers prior to applying a skim coat. In some cases new joints are
cut, or cut deeper to try to prevent future cracking.
IS THERE A WARRANTY?
Definately! All STARDEK Products have a 10-year warranty against excessive fading, delamination, and product failure.
We also warranty the workmanship for a period of 2-years.
( Warranties are based on a reapplication of sealer if needed every 3-4 years. An inspection is also required every year
by one of our reps.)
HOW DOES THIS PRODUCT BOND TO CONCRETE?
First, the concrete surface is etched and pressure washed to clean off dirt, remove loose aggregate, and open the concrete pores.
Next we apply the sealing concrete system that you have chosen (Stardust, Stardek1, Stardek2, or Stardek3. All jobs are sealed with a
base sealer, some colored, some clear depending on which system you have chosen. This sealer coat penetrates the old concrete and
bonds all layers to the concrete. When dry, these concrete layers become a permanent part of the existing concrete, providing
outstanding weather and stain resistant properties.
HOW IS IT MAINTAINED PROPERLY?
Although the concretesealing system is extremely durable, it is not indestructible. The rule of thumb is this; if it will scratch, chip or damage
concrete, chances are it may damage the surface also. Exercise caution when dropping extremely heavy things on it. Take care not to
drag real sharp heavy items that could scratch it. Periodic washing is all you should have to do to maintain the surface. Clean oil
spills and the like as quickly as possible to keep it looking new.
WHAT ABOUT EXPANSION JOINTS, ARE THEY COVERED UP?
Expansion joints and cold or control joints are necessary to prevent cracking of the concrete. Concrete must be allowed to
expand and contract with temperature changes. These joints provide a "controlled crack" for this movement. All
expansion joints are left in place, we cannot cover them up. We can also re-cut all existing joints a little deeper to ensure
that when it does move, it moves where we want it to, and not at some undisclosed weak spot.
WHAT SURFACES CAN IT BE APPLIED TO?
Our products can be applied to any concrete surface, River rock, or Kool Deck, vertical or horizontal. Wood surfaces must
have a cement backer board applied to add stability and minimize flexing.
